A Western Rite expression of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church rooted in Apostolic Tradition, sacramental worship, and the inclusive love of Christ.

Welcome

We are delighted to welcome you.

We are delighted to welcome you.

WHY:  The Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese of North America

The Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese of North America is a Western Rite expression of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church that has existed since the time of the Apostles. We are a faith community called by Christ to a life of radical discipleship. We are Orthodox in foundation, liturgically Charismatic in framework and Evangelical in Function.

We live in a lonely world.  We are great at keeping people out–while at the same time longing for someone to call, to drop by, or just to be present with each other.

We can communicate instantly–through text or Face book messages, e-mails, or (gasp!) even phone calls–with most anyone and everyone.  Yet we seem lonelier than ever.

And sometimes, it seems, just as we do let people in, they move away.  Sometimes literally–they move to another town or state.  But sometimes we move away from each other emotionally.  Jesus calls us to come, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:28-30)

What we long for, the state we all desire, says the poet T.S. Eliot, is to find that “still point in a turning world.”

OCANA is a Church with a vision of creating an alternative to lonely and independent living–a family of faith.  She is a vehicle to transport a turning, changing world to Jesus Christ who is the still point of our turning world, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (Jn14:6) Come and join us in forming a community that finds its stillness in the One whose faithful love endures forever.

The way to move towards this stillness, says the author Ron Rolheiser, is through commitment and fidelity–to people, places and projects.  Many of us build spirituality around moving from one thing to the next, never really belonging, and never staying faithful.

But our God in Jesus Christ is a covenant-making, commitment-keeping God.  He is love and where love flourishes, we find commitment and faithfulness, Children thrive, strangers and guests find a home.

God is calling people to “Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”(Ps46:10) As Believers in Christ we must reflect the nature of our ever-faithful God because our commitment to His values shapes us. OCANA is based on God’s values. It is living your life the way God made it by using ancient biblical wisdom to solve contemporary problems.

The Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese has “Tax Exempt” status as a member under the jurisdiction of the patriarch and metropolitan Archbishop of North America.

The Western Rite Orthodox Tradition

A Western Rite parish differs from the more widely recognized Eastern or Byzantine Rite parishes within the Orthodox Church. Before the separation between East and West, the ancient liturgical traditions of Western Christianity flourished within the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Following the Great Schism, however, much of the Western liturgical heritage gradually disappeared from Orthodox life in the West.

OUR BELIEF

Our Orthodox Catholic belief is succinctly expressed in the profession of faith called the Nicene Creed:

THE CREED

I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light: true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father; by Whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man; And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried; And arose again on the third day according to the Scriptures; And ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father; And shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life; Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the prophets. In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of the age to come. Amen.

AS A CHURCH

  • We are Orthodox = Acts 15:6-12, we accept, live and obey the apostolic teachings.
  • We are Catholic = Matt 13:24-30, we welcome all created in the image and likeness of God.
  • We are Charismatic = John 16:12-15, we are open to the promised Holy Spirit who will guide us to all truth.
  • We are a Church = Mark 14:22-26, we meet in memory of Jesus of Nazareth.

WORSHIP

In accordance with canon law and tradition, we are obligated to celebrate the Divine Liturgy that goes in accordance with the teachings of the undivided church. That only includes liturgy that does not include the filioque issue and has a clear Epiklesis. (“invocation” or “calling down from on high”) is the part of the Anaphora (Eucharistic Prayer) by which the priest invokes the Holy Spirit (or the power of His blessing) upon the Eucharistic bread and wine in some Christian churches.) For that purpose, we have selected the following liturgies to be use:

§Divine Liturgy of Saint Gregory (Preferred)

§Divine Liturgy of Saint Tikhon

Divine Liturgy of Saint Tikhon

The Divine Liturgy of Saint Tikhon is celebrated by approximately two-thirds of the parishes within the Antiochian Western Rite Vicariate. This liturgy was developed from the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer and the Anglican Missal, carefully adapted to reflect Orthodox theology and practice.

The adaptations include the removal of the Filioque from the Nicene Creed, the restoration of prayers for the departed, the invocation of the saints, and the strengthening of the Epiclesis within the Eucharistic Prayer. In addition, pre-Communion prayers from the Byzantine tradition have been incorporated, creating a liturgical expression that is both authentically Western and fully Orthodox.

Divine Liturgy of Saint Gregory

The Divine Liturgy of Saint Gregory is celebrated by the remaining parishes of the Antiochian Western Rite Vicariate, as well as by some communities within the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR). This rite is derived from the traditional Roman Tridentine Mass and has been adapted for Orthodox use through the removal of the Filioque and the inclusion of a Byzantine-style Epiclesis.

The Liturgy of Saint Gregory is particularly common among parishes with roots in the Lutheran, Roman Catholic, or Old Catholic traditions, including communities received through the Society of Saint Basil in 1961. It preserves the richness of the historic Western liturgical heritage while fully expressing the faith and doctrine of the Orthodox Church.

Local Church

We operate churches dedicated to the propagation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; teaching the Bible as the inspired and inerrant Word of God; training and ordaining deacons, priests and bishops; training and encouraging lay persons in the operation of the Christian faith; providing a place of worship and Christian service for all persons; and engaging in religious charitable work.

Religious Instruction

We have schools of religious instruction for children and adults using all appropriate media available: classes, conferences, seminars, radio, television, and any other appropriate media hereafter discovered and established.

Religious Literature

The church develops, publishes, and distributes literature in the form of books, pamphlets, audio and video tapes, and other forms of mass media for the express purposes of educating persons with the Word of God.

Seminary Institution

The church established a Seminary ( St Michael's Institute) for the preparation of candidates for Holy Orders and Lay Ministers who minister in our ancient apostolic Orthodox Catholic tradition and other Apostolic Churches of like faith and practice.

Introducing the Western Rite

The Western Rite Orthodox Tradition

A Western Rite parish differs from the more widely recognized Eastern or Byzantine Rite parishes within the Orthodox Church. Before the separation between East and West, the ancient liturgical traditions of Western Christianity flourished within the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Following the Great Schism, however, much of the Western liturgical heritage gradually disappeared from Orthodox life in the West.

During the nineteenth century, especially following the development of the doctrine of papal infallibility within the Roman Catholic Church, many Western Christians began seeking the apostolic continuity and theological purity preserved within Holy Orthodoxy. These believers desired to maintain the ancient understanding of the Bishop of Rome as holding a primacy of honor rather than universal jurisdiction and supremacy. At the same time, they sought to preserve their traditional Western forms of worship, purified and restored in harmony with Orthodox theology.

In response to this desire, the Holy Synod of Moscow approved a restored form of the ancient Western Liturgy, commonly known as the Liturgy of St. Gregory the Great. This liturgy remains one of the oldest surviving liturgical expressions of the undivided Church still celebrated today. Through this restoration, the Orthodox Church reaffirmed the rightful place of Western liturgical spirituality within the fullness of Orthodoxy.

In the twentieth century, the Patriarchate of Antioch formally established the Western Rite Vicariate in North America, further confirming the legitimacy and value of Western liturgical tradition within the Orthodox Church. In doing so, the Church reclaimed an authentic part of her historical and spiritual inheritance.

According to the Western Rite Directory promulgated by Metropolitan ANTONY Bashir in 1962, the purpose of the Western Rite is twofold:

  1. To provide a spiritual home within the Orthodox Church for Western Christians from non-Byzantine cultural and liturgical backgrounds.

  2. To bear witness to the catholicity, universality, and fullness of the Orthodox Church among Byzantine Rite faithful, clergy, and theologians.

Although smaller in number than Eastern Rite communities, Western Rite Orthodoxy continues to grow throughout the world, particularly in the United States. It has become a fruitful missionary outreach to those who seek the fullness of the Orthodox Catholic Faith while remaining rooted in the spiritual and cultural expressions of the Christian West.

Orthodox Christians of both the Western and Eastern Rites remain fully united in faith and communion. They share the same sacraments, apostolic doctrine, episcopal hierarchy, and holy tradition. Clergy of both rites serve under canonical Orthodox bishops and together confess the one Faith delivered to the saints.

The mission of the Orthodox Church, founded by Jesus Christ and proclaimed by the Apostles, is to lead all people into the fullness of Truth. Wherever the Orthodox Faith has been faithfully preached and lived, it has drawn souls to Christ. In a world increasingly marked by spiritual confusion and doctrinal instability, the Orthodox Church continues to stand as a beacon of apostolic truth, holiness, and continuity.

The Western Rite Liturgy

Not all Orthodox Christians worship according to Eastern or Byzantine liturgical forms. The Western Rite preserves the historic liturgical traditions of Western Christianity while remaining fully Orthodox in theology, sacramental life, and spiritual practice.

Compared to the Byzantine Rite, the Western Rite is generally simpler in structure, shorter in length, and incorporates hymnody and liturgical expressions that are familiar to many Western Christians. The Western Rite, as approved by the Orthodox Catholic Archdiocese, consists primarily of traditional Roman Catholic and Anglican liturgical forms carefully corrected and restored to conform fully to Orthodox doctrine.

Some Western Rite parishes celebrate a form of the ancient Roman Liturgy in either Latin or English, reflecting the reverence and beauty of pre–Vatican II Catholic worship. Others use liturgies derived from the traditional Anglican Book of Common Prayer. While the theological corrections introduced by the Orthodox Church are significant, they are often subtle enough that many traditional Roman Catholics and Anglo-Catholics would find the worship both familiar and spiritually enriching.

Among the most important restorations are:

  • The removal of the Filioque (“and the Son”) from the Nicene Creed.

  • The strengthening of the Epiclesis, the invocation of the Holy Spirit during the Eucharistic Prayer.

The Nicene Creed teaches that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. Historically, the addition of the Filioque clause in the West developed gradually and was originally resisted even by early Bishops of Rome. Orthodox theology preserves the distinct relationships within the Holy Trinity: the Son is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father through the Son.

In the Western Rite Orthodox Liturgy, the priest explicitly invokes the Holy Spirit upon the Eucharistic Gifts, praying:

“And we beseech thee, O Lord, to send down thy Holy Spirit upon these offerings, that He would make this bread the precious Body of thy Christ, and that which is in this Cup the precious Blood of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, transmuting them by thy Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. Amen.”

In addition to these restorations, the Western Rite preserves the beauty, reverence, and devotional richness of historic Western Christianity while remaining fully Orthodox in faith and practice.

As many traditional Christians observe increasing departures from historic Christian doctrine and worship within portions of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, many are rediscovering the stability, apostolic continuity, and sacramental fullness of the Orthodox Church through the Western Rite. Here, they are able to retain reverent and familiar forms of worship while entering into full communion with the ancient Orthodox Faith under canonical Orthodox bishops who faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ handed down from the Apostles.
